BATTERY LIFE ENHANCER REVIVER

March 4th, 2009

“Do not be desirous of having things done quickly. Do not look at small advantages. Desire to have things done quickly prevents their being done thoroughly. Looking at small advantages prevents great affairs from being accomplished”.

That batteries have a finite life is due to occurrence of the unwanted chemical or physical changes to, or the loss of, the active materials of which they are made. Otherwise they would last indefinitely. These changes are usually irreversible and they affect the electrical performance of the cell.

Battery life can usually only be extended by preventing or reducing the cause of the unwanted parasitic chemical effects which occur in the cells. Some ways of improving battery life and hence reliability are considered below.

Sulphating is a common cause of battery failure. Reviver is a useful product for increasing your battery’s life span.

Sulphating in various kinds of batteries

UPS batteries: UPS systems use Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF) batteries. Some of these batteries have liquid electrolytes, while others have jelly, which doesn’t require water level checks. But these SMF batteries are not completely sealed and do emit gases, the electrolyte level does go down and these also lose capacity of UPS batteries gradually diminishes as the batteries becomes old, and a time comes when these batteries have to be replaced. UPS batteries use superior quality material in their core, yet sulphate is the main cause of their failure. These batteries easily rejuvenate and respond well to the reviver treatment.

Automobile batteries: Sulphating in car batteries leads to corrosion in battery plates, and the plate materials fall to the bottom of the battery. This is called shedding, and it takes place because of the high porosity in car battery plates that maximizes surface area, and thereby allows the maximum discharge that is required for starting-up the engine. Sulphating enters the porous cavities of the plates, harden and expands greatly, and breaks the plate’s area; it is not possible to revive a dead automobile battery. A reviver device is a battery maintenance product used to eliminate ‘shedding’. One reviver unit is attached to a vehicle battery, but can also maintain a number of vehicles by interchanging it between them for a few days, or by charging a few battery at a time with a battery charger along with a reviver. With this technology you can expect the engine to start quickly, the air-conditioner will cool better, the car’s headlights will be brighter, and the cost of battery replacement will be reduced, finally translating into a fully dependable battery.

Traction batteries: Traction battery plates are solid and don’t have the porous qualities of automotive batteries. These batteries discharge huge amount of amperage over a long period, as their plates are quite large, Thick and heavy. Shadding is absent because battery plates are not porous. Sulphating coats and insulates the exterior of the plate, not allowed the battery to charge or discharge. High temperatures are recorded in sulphated batteries because of the high resistance and insulation and excessive current drain. Since the plates are not heavily corroded, it is comparatively easier to rejuvenate a traction battery by using the discharge/charge cycles, re-strengthening the electrolyte, and allowing the battery to return to normal state. In the absence of sulphating, the battery is always stronger and has a long life. This in turn increases the running time of battery replacement cost is also reduced.

Let us now discuss in depth, what a reviver is all about. A reviver is a compact small electronic device, employing microprocessor technology, which is guaranteed to dissolve sulphate accumulation in new ones. This is because less electrical energy is needed for charging a de-sulphated battery. A reviver is also an eco- friendly device, as it helps reduce the disposal volumes of poisonous lead plates.

How does reviver technology work?
Electrical pulses are injected at a frequency that is equivalent to the resonant frequency of the sulphate crystals, with a fast voltage rise and short duration of DC. As a sulphate crystal resonate, it is able to become ionized and reform back into the electrolyte as an active material. Battery plates stay clean, providing more power, faster recharge speed, and cooler charging temperatures. Due to the complete absence of sulphating, there is no ageing effect, and this result in extraordinarily long battery life.

What the reviver does is electronically dissolve sulphate formations back into the electrolyte solution without taking the battery out of service. Reviver technology products are being used as preventive maintenance tools, to prevent the battery from mechanical damage caused due to sulphating. The reviver units can be used to rejuvenate acid batteries-ordinary cell, SMF, heavy-duty traction battery or a stationery cell.

Here are a couple of things to look on when you are planning on investing in reviver products.

Points to ponder

Here are a few points that you are bound to find useful when considering reviver technology

  • The reviver units are manufactured according to approved international standards. Rating can be continuous or intermittent.
  • The reviver current is between 0-4 amps and the frequency is 8000-12000 cycles/sec.
  • All units are auto- activated when the battery is receiving charging current and automatically stop when charging stops. The switching on and off of the LED lamp indicates this.
  • One reviver can rejuvenate a number of batteries connected in series or parallel, if the total voltage and ampere-hour ratings are suitable to the units.
  • Reviver products are epoxy-moulded, shock-resistant, and waterproof and can withstand high ambient temperature.

Connecting a reviver is simple, Connect the red wire of the reviver unit the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal of the battery. Make sure that the battery voltage corresponds to the reviver voltage. Now charge the battery as usual.

Some applications of reviver units can be found in automobiles, generator starting units, motor boats, ships, battery-operated toys, forklifts, trucks, vans, buses, electric cars, tripping units, UPS and inverters, golf carts, off-shore equipment and emer

BATTERY PROBLEMS?

March 4th, 2009

The experience of many battery users, if not most, Inverter owners are that short battery life and dead batteries are a chronic problem. In this essay I will discuss why this is so and what you can do to eliminate this problem.

There are three primary reasons why battery problems occur:
• Poor quality of batteries or inadequate battery power
• Faulty installation
• Faulty charging systems

Quality and Capacity It is very common even for the professional inverter installer to buy low quality batteries and batteries that are of insufficient capacity to supply the needs of the AC electrical equipment in the house. Unlike the Sealed Lead Acid (UPS) Batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries, which need to be completely discharged occasionally, lead-acid batteries become damaged when heavily discharged. Allow a battery system to become partially discharged and it becomes seriously weakened and never again will return to its original, full-charge rate.

For this reason, it is important not to allow lead acid battery systems to become depleted. But this is nearly impossible when the total ampere/hour capacity just barely meets the total demand, for the batteries are constantly being over-taxed.

For example, it is very common to find inferior UPS batteries, Automobile Batteries and Traction batteries in the Nigerian market. Automotive batteries are discernible by their thin, cheap plastic casings. Auto electric repair shops tell us that these days that the quality of automotive batteries has declined substantially. One of the primary cut backs in quality is the size and quality of the lead plates that generate the electricity. These thin, low-quality plates not only don’t last as long as better quality units, but also very quickly begin to experience a falloff in the total amount of power they can generate. This, in turn, taxes the battery even more, thereby shortening its life span.

In other words, what are being passed off as “UPS” batteries are really car batteries that not suitable for Inverter use. True Deep Cycle batteries are distinguishable by both their heavy plastic casings and their substantially greater weight. They weigh considerably more because the lead plates will be close to twice as thick as automotive batteries. Because plates corrode in the process of generating electricity, plate size and thickness is the criteria for quality. Generally speaking, the thicker the plate, the longer it will last.

Proper Installation Some Inverter owners complain that even when they purchase top quality batteries, they still don’t seem to last long. This is usually because of faulty installation or poor maintenance. Whether you’re using gel cells or standard lead-acid batteries, they still have to be maintained. Here’s a short list of common life-shortening factors.

• Batteries must be kept clean and dry. If the top surface of the battery gets dirty or wet, a small flow of electricity will flow between the terminals as the water creates a conductive path. If installed in a location where water can drip onto them, this can cause the batteries to discharge fairly rapidly.
• Batteries must not be sitting on a wet or damp surface. To understand the importance of this, just take a fully charged battery and set it on an apparently dry concrete floor. It will discharge right through the casing in about a week. Even the plastic casing is not a total isolator.
• Batteries located in inaccessible location. This is a very common problem. If the owner has to stand on his head or crawl on his belly to reach the batteries, they’re not likely to get serviced. To make matters worse, its going to cost a lot more to pay someone to get them in and out of that tight hole. Most Installers will put the batteries right next to the Inverter so that they can save the cost of long cables. Consider relocating your batteries to a more convenient location if they’re in a place where they can’t be reached or get wet. Ultimately, it will save you a lot more than the cost of moving them.

Battery Chargers There’s no point in having good quality batteries and a low quality charger. Cheap chargers will ultimately do more harm than good and here’s the thing to remember.
A brand new, good

quality 12 volt battery, depending on size, will generate between 13.0 and 14.5 volts. That’s because each cell will generate slightly more than 2 volts per cell when they are new. But as the batteries age, they will progressively generate less voltage and power per cell.
Cheap battery chargers cannot adjust for these changes in total voltage over time. They’re factory set to charge the battery to the original power output. A battery that takes a total charge of 13.5 volts this year may only be capable of coming up to 13.0 volts next year. These results in overcharging, a condition which damages the battery and results in a rapid loss of life. Better quality, and therefore more expensive chargers, are equipped with devices to detect when the battery has reached its maximum charge level and then shuts down, thereby saving it from overcharging. True Power International is India’s First Inverter Manufacturer with good quality built-in battery chargers, Battery Life Enhancer & Power Saver Technology. Avoid buying a charger based on price if your inverter comes with an external Charger!

Cable Connectors It is very common for installers of Inverters to attach battery cables to the terminals with substandard connectors. Foremost among these are ring terminal ends attached with wing nuts to threaded studs. There are a number of things wrong with this arrangement, not the least of which is the tendency of the connections to come loose. Secondly, it’s likely to be creating a high resistance connection. The bottom line is that the cables should never be connected in this way. Nor should cable ends use steel end clamps that will rust and create resistance. Cables should be swaged to heavy lead lugs with the standard clamping arrangement to the battery post. If your system does not have swaged lead terminals, get them changed soon because they can be causing damage in more ways than one by creating a high resistance connection.

If you are having a problem with large accumulations of white crud developing on the battery connections, this is because either you’re not keeping the battery tops clean, or the batteries are constantly leaking fluid.

Summary Even if you own a Inverter with a substandard DC electrical system that has a continual problem with battery discharge, it is neither difficult nor particularly costly to upgrade your system and keep it functioning at maximum performance.
Correcting one or more of the above defects, if you have them, will save hundreds, even thousands of Naira in damage and replacement costs. Good quality batteries should have no problem lasting three years or longer. Compare that with the cost of breakdowns and replacing batteries every 18 months or so
